Bulk viscosity of N = 2 ∗ plasma

We use gauge theory/string theory correspondence to study the bulk viscosity of strongly coupled, mass deformed SU(Nc) N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma, also known as N = 2 gauge theory. For a wide range of masses we confirm the bulk viscosity bound proposed in [1]. For a certain choice of masses, the theory undergoes a phase transition with divergent specific heat cV ∼ |1 − Tc/T |−1/2. W...

Radiative Bulk Viscosity

Viscous resistance to changes in the volume of a gas arises when different degrees of freedom have different relaxation times. Collisions tend to oppose the resulting departures from equilibrium and, in so doing, generate entropy. Even for a classical gas of hard spheres, when the mean free paths or mean flight times of constituent particles are long, we find a nonvanishing bulk viscosity. Here...

‘Understanding’ cosmological bulk viscosity

A universe consisting of two interacting perfect fluids with the same 4-velocity is considered. A heuristic mean free time argument is used to show that the system as a whole cannot be perfect as well but neccessarily implies a nonvanishing bulk viscosity. A new formula for the latter is derived and compared with corresponding results of radiative hydrodynamics.

The Jeans Mechanism and Bulk-viscosity Effects

In this paper we study the gravitational instability in presence of viscosity. In particular, the standard Jeans Mechanism is analyzed taking into account bulk-viscosity effects in the first-order Newtonian dynamics. We show how the perturbation evolution is damped by dissipative processes and the top-down fragmentation mechanism is suppressed for strong viscous effects. The critical value of t...

The Plasma Viscosity.

The viscosity of the plasma was studied briefly by Fahraeus in his original investigations (1921) into the blood sedimentation rate. In 1940 further studies were made by T'Ang and Wang, who concluded that it gave a more accurate picture of the activity of disease processes than the erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The plasma viscosity technique was independently developed by Whittington and his ...
